It opened its doors in 1851 as a public library but is no longer open to the public.
Its iron structure has been designed to support the storage of 900.000 books, and its glass ceiling to let in maximum light.
Until 1932, a system of pipes conveyed the requested books, from the storage on the upper floors to the lobby counter.
